Remote Viewing with VDRC

I can't get into my Server from my remote computer. I think the problem is that my server is on a router and the router isn't finding "port 9000" or whatever it is its looking for. Do I have to rename onee of the ports on my router? If so, how? If not, what do I need to do?

Thanks.

Ray,

Thank you for your email.  There are several steps that you will need to take in order to be able to view your system remotely.  Please follow those steps below:

A. Getting your Internal IP Address:
First you will need the internal network IP address of the Server PC (the server PC is the PC that has the DVR Card and VDR-S software installed).  The internal IP address will be needed for port forwarding on your router.

1. Go to your Start Menu ---> Run

2. Type "cmd" and press "OK"

3. In the command window that opens, type "IPCONFIG" (shown at yellow arrow) and hit enter on the keyboard.  It will show the IP address of the PC (shown at Red Arrow).  Write down this number because you will need it later.  Also find the "Default Gateway" address and write it down, as it will be needed for accessing your router.

IP address from this example: 192.168.0.100
Default Gateway address from example: 192.168.0.12

B. Forwarding Ports in your Router:
We will not be able to walk you through this step by step because every internet router/modem is different.  You may need to contact your Internet service provider, or the manufacturer of your router to find the specific steps to forward the ports in your specific router.  We have shown a D-Link router below as an example only.  YOUR ROUTER MAY BE DIFFERENT PLEASE CONSULT WITH YOUR ISP OR MANUFACTURER OF YOUR ROUTER FOR ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE WITH YOUR SPECIFIC ROUTER.

1. Most routers/modems are accessed through a web browser.  The address used to access the router is usually the Default Gateway address that we obtained above.  Simply open up a web browser and type "http://" + "the default gateway address" so with our example above, we would type http://192.168.0.12 into our web browser address bar to connect to our router.

2.  With most routers, you will have to login in order to access the settings.  Unfortunately, we cannot help you here.  You will have to know or be able to find the default password for your router.

3.  Once logged in, in the case of our D-Link router, you will need to access the Advanced Settings.

4.  Next, you will need to setup port forwarding for ports 9000 and 9001 for BOTH TCP and UDP (Shown Below) - Note that the port forwarding is pointing to our Internal IP Address that we found with IPCONFIG above.

5.  Next apply the settings in your router.

Note, Firewalls on your PC like the Windows Firewall can block access to your cameras remotely.  Please turn off or configure these firewalls to ALLOW traffic to your PC over ports 9000-9001 (or sometimes referencing the program VDR-S).

C. Setting up VDR-S software networking:
We are just going to make sure that the initial software settings for network access in Alnet are configured.  Please note that it would be best to review all of your software settings in the software manual before proceeding.

1. In the VDR-S server software, go to Configuration --> Network Services

2. On the "Video" Tab, ensure that the 2 buttons are set to "Enabled" to enable the network functions of the Alnet Software.  Then click OK to return to the main viewport.

3. Go to Tools --> Register Domain

4. In the Domain Name field, type in the address that you wish to use to access your system remotely.  This Dynamic name will allow you to view your cameras even over dynamic IP address DSL and Cable internet connections.  Do not use any spaces or special characters in this domain name.  You will ONLY be able to register it once, so make sure it is a name that you will remember.  Fill in something into the rest of the boxes for registration and then click on Register.

Write down the address you typed in.

Our example above would be testing1234.vdr-s.com  (This address will be used by the remote client software for connecting remotely.

Once you have completed the steps above, you should be able to install the VDR-C Remote client software onto your remote PC and connect in successfully to your server.

Hopefully this helps,

Response from RayBucknor - Moved

I can't access my server remotely. When I type in either the address http://192.168.2.50/ or my website http://xxxxx.vdr-s.com/, I get "The page cannot be displayed". What am I doing wrong?

Re: Remote Viewing with VDRC

Ray,

Thank you for your follow-up post.  The IP address that you gave does not presently have any ports open.  This means that you currently do not have the ports forwarded properly in your Router, or you have a firewall blocking access.

Make sure that you have forwarded the ports in your router, and that there is only 1 router in your system (if there is a seperate modem, it probably has a built-in router too).

Thank you

Re: Remote Viewing with VDRC
I have double checked that the ports have been forwarded.
Port Range
Application Start End Protocol IP Address Enable
  to 192.168.2.
  to 192.168.2.

I previously had the address set as static. It is now dynamic.I only have one router.
